Amid ongoing corruption investigations, the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has put a freeze on close to 30 gaming license applications linked to Iosif Galea, a former director at Bet90 (www.bet90.com), due to suspicions surrounding his alleged role in internal misconduct at the regulator.
Background on Iosif Galea
MGA Tenure
Galea served as a compliance officer at the MGA from 2007 to 2013.
Post-MGA Career
After leaving the MGA, he worked as a compliance consultant, primarily helping foreign applicants obtain MGA licenses.
Nominee Directorships
Galea also operated as a nominee director for various clients, including Bet90 Sports Limited, receiving high monthly compensation for his services.
German Legal Actions
German authorities issued a European arrest warrant for Galea, citing his non-compliance with tax and regulatory obligations during his time as a director at firms like Bet90 Sports Limited. He was later detained in Italy based on this warrant.
MGA’s Sanctions and Regulatory Action
Prior to Galea’s arrest, the Malta Gaming Authority imposed a €53,000 penalty and issued an official reprimand concerning his conduct in the industry. The regulator also stated that his authorization to serve in key positions within MGA-licensed companies would not be extended beyond its expiration date in September 2022.
New Accusations in Malta
Authorities in Malta suspect Galea of involvement in a scheme involving the leak of sensitive internal data from within the MGA. In response, the MGA suspended 35 applications connected to Galea, which affected 24 current or prospective license holders. Additionally, a European arrest warrant was issued for Galea due to his alleged involvement in financial misconduct.
In addition, former MGA Chief Technology Officer Jason Farrugia and his wife Christine Farrugia are now facing charges of money laundering and fraud. Investigators claim that Jason Farrugia leaked confidential client data from the MGA and received large financial payments from Galea during the period of these alleged violations.
